Eddy-Current Transducer Characteristics

The probe utilizes an eddy-current sensor principle to measure static position and dynamic vibration of rotating machinery shafts. The 8 mm diameter probe tip generates an electromagnetic field; when a conductive target enters this field, eddy currents are induced in the target surface, causing a measurable impedance change in the probe coil. This impedance variation is linearly proportional to the gap distance between the probe tip and the target surface within the calibrated 2 mm range.

Gap voltage validation targets -10 VDC at the Proximitor output when the probe is at calibrated gap. Cross-talk suppression between adjacent probes is achieved through individual twisted-pair shielded cable runs and proper probe mounting spacing (minimum 1.5x probe diameter center-to-center).

Ordering Information

  • 1 x 330101-00-11-15-12-CN Proximity Probe (8 mm, 1.1 m cable, 12 mm tip)

  • 1 x M10 x 1 jam nut (stainless steel)

  • 1 x Installation verification card

Note: Proximitor driver module (3300/01 or 3300/02) and extension cable sold separately.

Field Installation Guidelines

  • Mount probe with minimum 25 mm (1 inch) edge clearance from shaft step or keyway to avoid magnetic flux distortion.

  • Tighten jam nut to 1.7 Nm (15 lb-in) torque specification. Do not exceed 2.3 Nm to prevent probe body deformation.

  • Verify gap voltage at the Proximitor terminal block reads between -9.5 VDC and -10.5 VDC after installation.

  • Route probe cable away from power conductors (>30 cm separation) to maintain signal integrity.

  • Use only Bently Nevada calibrated targets (AISI 4140) for initial gap verification; other materials require scale factor recalculation.

Delivery Information

  • Delivery time: 2-7 days when payment finish

  • Shipped via DHL / FedEx / UPS

  • Anti-static industrial packaging with shock-absorbing foam insert

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can the 330101 probe be used with a 3300/01 Proximitor?

A: Yes. The 330101 is electrically compatible with both 3300/01 single-channel and 3300/02 dual-channel Proximitor modules. The probe impedance and scale factor are matched to the Proximitor's internal oscillator circuit. No recalibration is required when pairing within the same 3300 series.

Q: What is the effect of temperature on probe accuracy?

A: The probe exhibits a temperature coefficient of approximately 0.03% per deg C. Over the full operating range (-35 to +177 deg C), the maximum deviation from nominal scale factor is +/- 3%. For applications requiring tighter tolerance, temperature compensation is performed at the Proximitor module level via the built-in TC circuit.

Q: Can I cut the probe cable to shorten it?

A: No. The probe cable contains a precision twisted-pair shield configuration. Cutting or splicing the cable will alter the characteristic impedance and introduce signal reflection, invalidating the calibration. Use the appropriate extension cable (330130 series) if length adjustment is needed.

Q: What happens if the probe tip contacts the rotating shaft?

A: The probe tip is constructed from wear-resistant tungsten carbide. Momentary rub contact will not immediately damage the probe, but sustained contact will cause tip wear and gap voltage drift. The Proximitor will register a gap alarm once the voltage exceeds the -2 VDC to -22 VDC valid range.

Q: Is the probe compatible with 3500 series monitoring?

A: The 330101 probe is designed for 3300 series Proximitors. For 3500 series monitors, use the 3300-series Proximitor as an intermediary or select the 3500-compatible probe variants (330500 series). Direct connection to 3500 I/O modules is not supported.

Q: What is the minimum target diameter required?

A: The minimum target diameter is 25 mm (1 inch) for accurate measurement. Smaller targets produce reduced eddy-current field strength, resulting in non-linear output. The target must also extend at least 12 mm beyond the probe centerline in the axial direction.

Q: How often should gap voltage be re-verified?

A: Gap voltage should be verified at every scheduled maintenance outage. Normal drift is less than 0.1 VDC per year under steady operating conditions. If drift exceeds 0.5 VDC between outages, inspect for probe tip wear, cable shielding degradation, or Proximitor component drift.

Q: Can multiple probes share a common ground?

A: Each probe must have its own isolated shield termination at the Proximitor end. Sharing shield grounds between probes can introduce ground loops and cross-talk, particularly at frequencies above 5 kHz. Use individual shielded twisted-pair cables for each probe run.
