Epiroc Secures $41M Order for Autonomous Electric Mining Rigs in Africa

Mining operators worldwide are accelerating the transition toward zero-emission extraction and remote field operations to improve site safety and lower total operating costs. Capitalizing on this momentum, Swedish mining equipment leader Epiroc has landed a major commercial agreement valued at SEK 380 million (approximately $41 million) to supply a fleet of high-performance surface mining units to an operator in Africa. Booked during the first quarter of 2026, the contract underlines a growing industry commitment toward autonomous fleet management and sustainable heavy equipment architectures within demanding open-pit environments.

The substantial supply agreement centers on Epiroc's Pit Viper 275 E series, a top-tier cable-electric variant designed for large-scale production drilling. Engineered to operate fully autonomously, these units eliminate direct site tailpipe emissions while removing human operators from hazardous drilling zones near rock faces. Beyond reducing environmental impact, the integration of autonomous surface rigs stabilizes duty cycles, improves drilling precision, and optimizes overall machine maintenance windows across extended operations. Epiroc President and CEO Helena Hedblom highlighted that this major equipment deployment reinforces the sector's shift toward safer, climate-conscious, and automated extraction technologies. Equipment deliveries are scheduled to begin shortly, with complete operational integration across the African mining facility anticipated by late 2027.
