Eddy-Current Probe Scaling and Gap Voltage Validation

The probe operates on eddy-current induction principles, requiring precise scaling against a calibrated target material (typically AISI 4140 steel). Target frequency response is linear within the 0-500 kHz range. Gap voltage validation must show a steady -10 VDC output at the monitor input when the probe tip is positioned at the specified linear range midpoint. System accuracy depends on maintaining the correct probe-to-target clearance and avoiding side-view mounting orientations that induce non-linear field distortion.

Technical Inquiries

Q: Is this probe compatible with the 3300 5 mm system?

A: No. The 3300 XL 8 mm probe has a different linear range and scaling factor than the 5 mm series. Mixing probe types will cause incorrect displacement readings.

Q: Can the cable be extended in the field?

A: No. Field splicing alters the system impedance and voids calibration. Use a pre-configured extension cable with the correct ClickLoc connector interface.

Q: What is the recommended torque for probe installation?

A: Tighten the locknut to 8 N·m (71 lbf·in) against the machine case to prevent loosening due to vibration without damaging the probe threads.

Field Installation Guidelines

Install the probe perpendicular to the conductive target surface. Ensure the unthreaded length provides adequate standoff from the machine housing. Do not exceed 5 threads of engagement when mounting in thin-walled brackets to avoid stressing the probe case. Route the coaxial cable away from high-voltage motor leads and variable frequency drive power lines. Connect the shield to the monitor ground terminal only; leave the probe-end shield floating to prevent ground loops.
