Pilz Launches IndustrialPI for IIoT and Soft PLC Applications

Pilz has introduced the IndustrialPI, a modular industrial PC based on Raspberry Pi architecture designed for IIoT gateway, soft PLC, and industrial data collection applications. The platform combines open-source flexibility with industrial-grade reliability for smart manufacturing environments.

The new IndustrialPI is built to simplify modern automation projects by supporting both edge connectivity and software-based control functions. Designed for Industry 4.0 environments, the device can collect operational data directly from machines and transfer it to cloud platforms for real-time monitoring, diagnostics, and production analysis.

Pilz positions the IndustrialPI as a flexible solution for manufacturers looking to modernize existing automation infrastructure without deploying large-scale hardware systems. Its compatibility with multiple industrial protocols allows easier integration into current plant networks and industrial communication architectures.

As an IIoT gateway, the IndustrialPI enables remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and centralized diagnostics. The system can act as a bridge between factory-floor equipment and cloud-based industrial software platforms, improving visibility across production operations.

The platform also functions as a soft PLC, allowing users to run control logic directly through software rather than relying entirely on traditional PLC hardware. This approach gives engineers greater flexibility for automation development, faster software updates, and lower deployment costs in certain applications.

Pilz offers two versions of the platform: the IndustrialPI 4 and IndustrialPI 4 Wi-Fi. The standard model includes 4 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC storage, and a 64-bit operating system optimized for automation tasks. The Wi-Fi version increases memory capacity to 8 GB and supports additional gateway and diagnostic functionality.

The IndustrialPI integrates with Pilz solutions including the PNOZmulti 2 safety controller and PSS 4000 automation system, enabling secure industrial data exchange between machines, enterprise networks, and cloud environments.

Another key advantage is the platform’s open-source ecosystem. The device ships with an industrial operating system and supports Node-RED, allowing engineers to create automation workflows and rapid prototypes through visual programming tools.

With manufacturers increasingly investing in edge computing, smart factory infrastructure, and scalable industrial connectivity, Pilz’s IndustrialPI provides a compact and cost-effective option for automation projects requiring flexible control and IIoT functionality.
