Pepperl+Fuchs Introduces G20 Ethernet System for Smarter Conveyor Control
Pepperl+Fuchs has expanded its industrial automation portfolio with the introduction of the G20 Ethernet System, a new motor control platform designed for both small conveyor installations and large-scale automated logistics environments. The system addresses a growing demand for flexible conveyor architectures that can handle increasing levels of automation while reducing network complexity.

In modern factories and distribution centers, conveyor systems act as the backbone of material movement. While some applications require only basic transport functions, advanced facilities often rely on interconnected conveyor networks that include multiple zones, sensors, routing systems, and intelligent control devices. Managing these systems efficiently requires compact hardware, reliable communication, and scalable control strategies.
The new Pepperl+Fuchs G20 Ethernet solution provides a simplified approach by allowing a single controller to manage up to 120 motor rollers through one IP address. Instead of assigning individual network addresses to numerous motor controllers, the G20 architecture reduces infrastructure requirements while maintaining precise control over conveyor operations.
The system consists of an Ethernet controller connected to the machine network through EtherNet/IP or PROFINET communication protocols, along with modular motor control units installed along the conveyor structure. Each controller supports up to four daisy-chained communication lines, with each line accommodating up to 15 motor modules.
Each motor module can operate two DC motors, supporting both 24 V and 48 V motor applications. This modular design allows engineers to create scalable conveyor layouts without significant changes to existing automation networks. The approach is particularly suitable for warehouses, production lines, packaging systems, and automated distribution centers where equipment expansion is expected over time.
Beyond motor control, the G20 modules also integrate sensor connectivity. Each unit supports up to two sensors, allowing basic decision-making functions to be executed locally. This capability reduces unnecessary communication traffic and enables faster responses in applications where immediate conveyor reactions are required.
One of the key features of the G20 Ethernet System is its support for both Zero Pressure Accumulation (ZPA) operation and PLC-controlled conveyor management. These two control modes can operate together within the same conveyor system, giving engineers greater flexibility when designing automation strategies.
In ZPA mode, sensors connected directly to the motor modules control conveyor zones through internal logic functions. This decentralized method reduces the workload placed on the main PLC and improves response times for routine conveyor movements, such as stopping or releasing packages between zones.
For applications requiring advanced coordination, the PLC-controlled mode enables direct control of individual motors through industrial fieldbus communication. Operators can manage motor speed, direction, and operational status from the central control system, making it suitable for complex routing applications where conveyor sections must work together.
The combination of local intelligence and centralized control reflects the direction of modern industrial automation systems, where distributed devices handle repetitive tasks while higher-level controllers focus on production optimization, scheduling, and data management.
The G20 platform also supports Industry 4.0 requirements through expanded data accessibility. In addition to PLC communication, each Ethernet controller provides connectivity through a REST API and OPC UA interface. These functions allow system integrators to collect operational data, analyze performance trends, monitor connected sensors, and develop custom applications for predictive maintenance and production analytics.
For automated warehouses and smart factories, access to real-time equipment information has become increasingly important. Conveyor systems are no longer viewed as simple transport equipment but as intelligent assets that contribute valuable operational data to manufacturing execution systems and enterprise-level platforms.
Pepperl+Fuchs has also focused on mechanical integration with the G20 design. Unlike traditional motor controllers that are mounted externally and may be exposed to physical damage, the G20 controller can be installed directly inside the conveyor rail structure. This mounting concept improves protection, reduces cable complexity, and creates a cleaner installation environment.
The controller features an IP67-rated enclosure and is designed to operate across a wide temperature range from -25°C to 70°C, making it suitable for demanding industrial environments. The tool-free mounting concept further helps reduce installation time and simplifies maintenance activities for system operators.
As logistics automation continues to evolve, companies are seeking conveyor technologies that can adapt to changing production requirements without requiring complete infrastructure replacement. The Pepperl+Fuchs G20 Ethernet System provides a scalable solution by combining compact hardware, industrial networking, decentralized intelligence, and advanced diagnostics.
With support for major industrial communication standards and compatibility with modern automation architectures, the G20 Ethernet platform represents a step toward more efficient, connected, and future-ready conveyor control systems for factories and automated warehouses worldwide.
