NORD Drivesystems Advances Packaging Automation with Smart Decentralized Drives
At this year’s PACK EXPO, NORD Drivesystems showcased a strategic evolution in motion control, highlighting how decentralized drive intelligence is reshaping the future of packaging automation. By integrating variable frequency drives (VFDs), high-efficiency motors, and real-time diagnostic tools into singular, modular packages, NORD is enabling packaging lines to become more responsive, adaptive, and resilient against the demands of modern high-speed production.

The centerpiece of the NORD exhibition was the NORDAC ON/ON+ VFD series, designed for decentralized control. Mounted directly onto the motor, these units allow for precise motion control at the point of application, streamlining installation and reducing the complexity of centralized control cabinets. The ON+ variant is specifically tuned for NORD’s IE5+ synchronous motors, which feature a fanless design and constant torque output across a wide speed range. This efficiency-first approach significantly lowers energy consumption while simplifying inventory, as manufacturers can utilize a single motor variant across multiple motion profiles.

Beyond raw power and efficiency, NORD is emphasizing the role of predictive analytics software in reducing unplanned downtime. The company demonstrated sophisticated condition monitoring capabilities embedded directly into their drive systems. By leveraging onboard sensors to track vibration, temperature, and electrical health metrics, these drives provide operators with real-time data dashboards. This shift allows for planned interventions based on actual component health, effectively moving maintenance strategies from reactive to proactive. Integrating these diagnostics directly into the drive hardware offers a streamlined, cost-effective alternative to external monitoring architectures.

NORD’s portfolio also addresses the rigorous demands of specialized environments. The inclusion of hygiene-certified units with IP69K ingress ratings and explosion-proof models ensures that their motion solutions remain effective in food-grade, washdown, or hazardous industrial settings. As packaging systems become increasingly complex, NORD’s focus on networked connectivity and data-driven maintenance is positioning their drives as the central nervous system of the factory floor, transforming static machines into dynamic, self-optimizing assets.
