Emerson Expands BP Partnership with Automation Systems for Shah Deniz Gas Project
Emerson has secured a major industrial automation contract from BP for the Shah Deniz Compression project, a strategic offshore development in Azerbaijan’s Caspian Sea region. The project represents a significant step in extending production capabilities from the mature Shah Deniz gas field by accessing lower-pressure reserves and improving long-term resource recovery.

As part of the agreement, Emerson will provide a complete automation solution for a new electrically powered, normally unattended offshore compression platform. The system will integrate process control, emergency shutdown functions, fire and gas protection, and power management capabilities, allowing operators to manage critical offshore processes remotely with enhanced safety and efficiency.
The Shah Deniz Compression project is designed to unlock approximately 50 billion cubic meters of additional natural gas production and around 25 million barrels of condensate. The new compression platform will operate as a central processing hub for gas produced from the Shah Deniz Alpha and Shah Deniz Bravo platforms, supporting BP’s strategy to maximize output from one of the Caspian region’s most important energy assets.
Emerson’s automation portfolio, including its industry-leading DeltaV Distributed Control System and DeltaV Safety Instrumented System solutions, will provide the foundation for reliable offshore control and protection. The deployment will also incorporate cloud-based engineering tools and digital twin technologies to support virtual commissioning, system validation, integration testing, and operator training before the facility becomes operational.
The offshore platform will feature four 11 MW compressors and will be operated remotely from BP’s Sangachal terminal located approximately 55 kilometers south of Baku. This approach reflects the growing adoption of remote operations, digital transformation, and autonomous facility management across the global oil and gas industry.
“Emerson has served as the main automation contractor for the Shah Deniz development for more than a decade,” said Ram Krishnan, chief operating officer of Emerson. The company highlighted that the continued partnership with BP demonstrates the importance of advanced automation systems in improving operational performance, expanding production capacity, and supporting safer offshore environments.
The latest contract builds upon Emerson’s previous automation involvement in Azerbaijan, including its role in the Shah Deniz Stage 2 development and the Azeri Central East project. Through these long-term collaborations, Emerson has supported BP’s transition toward highly integrated production systems that combine industrial control technology with digital engineering capabilities.
The Shah Deniz Compression project is scheduled for completion in 2029. Initial compression operations from the Shah Deniz Alpha platform are expected to begin the same year, followed by additional compression activities from Shah Deniz Bravo in 2030.
The project highlights a broader industry trend where offshore energy operators are investing heavily in advanced process automation, predictive maintenance, and digital twin platforms to extend the life of existing assets while improving reliability and reducing operational risks.
