Bihl+Wiedemann Launches Compact ASi-5 Counter Module for Flexible Automation
Bihl+Wiedemann has officially introduced the BWU4996, a compact addition to its ASi-5 counter module family developed for manufacturers seeking more efficient and flexible automation hardware. The new module targets applications where installation space is limited but reliable high-speed counting and measurement functions remain essential.

The standout feature of the BWU4996 is its ultra-compact housing design, which allows the device to be installed directly inside cable ducts. This creates new opportunities for machine builders and system integrators looking to simplify wiring layouts and reduce cabinet space in modern production facilities.

Despite its smaller footprint, the module still delivers the high-performance communication capabilities expected from ASi-5 industrial networking technology. Users can transmit either a 32-bit value range or up to four independent 16-bit counter values with cycle times as low as 1.27 ms, supporting real-time industrial automation and motion monitoring applications.

Unlike previous ASi-5 counter modules featuring four 2-channel counter inputs, the BWU4996 is optimized with two 2-channel inputs, making it especially suitable for compact machines, conveyor systems, positioning applications, and smaller production cells where fewer counting channels are required.
The module also provides enhanced flexibility through configurable inputs. If a counter input is not required, it can instead function as a digital input, allowing manufacturers to adapt the hardware to changing operational requirements without additional components.
Configuration and parameter assignment are handled through the Bihl+Wiedemann Software Suite, enabling engineers to customize each input individually for specific automation tasks. This simplifies commissioning and helps reduce engineering time during deployment.
Beyond standard counting functions, the BWU4996 supports a wide range of advanced operational modes, including:
-
Continuous and periodic counting
-
Preset and gating functions
-
Rotation direction detection
-
Frequency measurement
-
Cycle time monitoring
-
Capture and comparison operations
-
Adjustable timeout and filtering functions
The module is also built for demanding industrial environments with an IP67-rated housing, offering reliable protection against dust, vibration, and water exposure. This durability allows the module to operate directly on machines and throughout decentralized factory installations without additional protective enclosures.
As industrial manufacturers continue investing in Industry 4.0, decentralized automation, and compact machine architecture, solutions like the BWU4996 are becoming increasingly valuable. The combination of flexible installation, fast communication, and modular functionality positions the device as a practical option for next-generation manufacturing systems.
