Aptiv and Comau Partner to Advance Next-Generation Robotics and Intelligent Automation
A Strategic Framework for Industrial Innovation
Aptiv PLC, an industrial technology leader, and Comau, a prominent player in the industrial automation sector, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-develop advanced automation solutions. The partnership aims to help industrial operators enhance safety, efficiency, and autonomy across complex manufacturing and logistics environments.
The collaboration combines Aptiv's hardware and software portfolio—including Wind River edge platforms and the Aptiv PULSE sensor—with Comau's expertise in robotics and large-scale manufacturing deployment. By aligning these strengths, the companies plan to reduce the cost and complexity historically associated with adopting new manufacturing technologies.
Key Focus Areas of the Collaboration
The initial phase of the agreement targets several high-value use cases designed to modernize industrial operations:
-
Advanced Robotics: Integrating advanced perception solutions and compute architectures into Collaborative Robots (CoBots) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) to enable real-time decision-making.
-
AI-Enabled Logistics Automation: Upgrading Comau's logistics software using Wind River cloud and edge technologies to support machine learning (ML) at the edge and improve real-time responsiveness.
-
High-Performance Interconnects: Developing ruggedized cabling and modular connectors engineered for durability and weight efficiency in harsh, high-vibration robotic applications.
-
Intelligent Safety Architectures: Implementing multi-zone monitoring and deterministic compute to enhance worker safety and reduce system complexity.
Industry Perspectives on the Partnership
Jay Bellissimo, Senior Vice President and President of Intelligent Systems, Software and Services at Aptiv, highlighted the shift toward real-time computing at the edge:
"Robotics and industrial automation are evolving quickly, with systems that sense, think, and act in real time at the edge. Through our work with Comau, we aim to combine Aptiv's advanced perception, compute, and software solutions with Comau's deep expertise in robotics and large-scale industrial deployment, to help customers build smarter, safer automation without the cost and complexity that has historically slowed adoption."
Giovanni Volpes, Chief Extended Europe Officer at Comau, added:
"Comau's planned partnership with Aptiv creates a powerful combination of complementary strengths. Together, we can deliver advanced robotic and digital solutions that help customers in many different sectors modernize operations, accelerate AI adoption, and prepare for a future where autonomy is foundational to industrial productivity."
