ABB Expands Grid Automation Capabilities with the Acquisition of Netcontrol
Strategic Integration in Power Distribution
ABB has officially completed its acquisition of Netcontrol, incorporating the North European grid automation specialist into its Distribution Solutions division.
This strategic milestone significantly strengthens ABB’s ability to support utility companies worldwide as they navigate increasingly complex electrical grids. With the rapid acceleration of electrification and the decentralization of renewable energy, utility operators face unprecedented pressure to maintain network stability, flexibility, and operational resilience.
Expanding the Digital Portfolio
Netcontrol brings deep expertise in essential grid automation technologies, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and related engineering services. These capabilities are now fully integrated into ABB’s broader operational portfolio.
By combining these complementary solutions, ABB enhances its digital and operational offerings at the distribution level. This integration provides utilities with the advanced tools necessary to monitor dynamic power flows, respond to disruptions, and optimize existing infrastructure.
Perspectives from Industry Leaders
Sami Raitakoski, Global Business Line Manager for Grid Components at ABB, emphasized the rapidly changing nature of power distribution:
"Distribution grids are changing quickly. Utilities are dealing with more dynamic power flows, rising demand and growing pressure to improve continuity of supply, all while making better use of existing infrastructure. By bringing Netcontrol into ABB, we are strengthening our ability to support customers with grid automation solutions that help them keep networks stable, adapt more flexibly to change and respond more effectively to disruption. We are excited to welcome our new colleagues to the ABB team to make this possible."
Sami Kurunsaari, CEO of Netcontrol, also highlighted the mutual benefits of the transaction:
"With the close of this acquisition, our complementary portfolios will generate even greater value for our customers, and being part of ABB Group will accelerate the growth journey Netcontrol is currently on. Together, we can now empower utilities businesses in all regions to adapt and keep the grid ready for the future."
