Rockwell Automation and CAR Outline Smart Manufacturing Shift in Automotive

Rockwell Automation and the Center for Automotive Research have published findings detailing how data architectures and advanced intelligence are accelerating productivity across automotive production lines.

In a collaborative research endeavor, Rockwell Automation teamed up with the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) to release a comprehensive white paper highlighting the evolution of industrial technology within vehicle assembly, tire manufacturing, and battery fabrication facilities. The study emphasizes that automakers have moved beyond basic mechanical automation and are actively deploying predictive analytics software, computer vision systems, and machine learning models to solve complex operational bottlenecks.

While robotics and programmable controllers have long dominated core body shops, stamping units, and paint operations, modern manufacturing requirements are pushing digital solutions into intricate process steps like electronics assembly, inline quality inspection, and automated plant logistics. By leveraging real-time telemetry from shop-floor machinery, facilities are capturing measurable efficiency gains, including downtime drops up to 50% in targeted operations, a 5% increase in Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), and throughput surges between 5% and 7%.

Beyond internal process optimization, the research points out that digital tools are enabling regional manufacturing resilience and onshoring initiatives, allowing producers to mitigate tight labor availability while controlling baseline operating expenses. However, an operational gap is widening between early adopters leveraging full-stack industrial AI solutions and legacy facilities relying strictly on traditional control structures, directly influencing supplier competitiveness, warranty costs, and overall market position.
