First Mining Reaches Development Deal With Ontario First Nations

Cat Lake First Nation (CLFN), Lac Seul First Nation (LSFN) and First Mining Gold have signed a definitive agreement covering the development of the Springpole Gold project in northwestern Ontario.

Located about 140 km north of Sioux Lookout, Springpole is one of Ontario’s largest undeveloped gold projects. First Mining reports an inferred resource of approximately 4.8 million ounces of gold and 28 million ounces of silver.

The agreement covers the project’s full lifecycle, including construction, operations and eventual closure. It also establishes a framework for environmental management, community participation and economic benefits for the two First Nations.

The agreement was developed through an Anishinaabe-led impact assessment process, known as ALIA. Under the framework, CLFN and LSFN will have opportunities to participate in environmental monitoring and management, while First Mining plans preferential training and employment initiatives for local communities.

The agreement follows a C$4 million deal signed in June to develop an all-season access road connecting Cat Lake with Sioux Lookout. The road is expected to improve regional access and support the broader development of Springpole.

First Mining CEO Dan Wilton said the agreement represents the result of extensive cooperation with both Nations and provides a foundation for advancing the project.

For the mining industry, the agreement also highlights the growing importance of Indigenous partnerships, environmental oversight and local workforce development in major Canadian resource projects. These factors are becoming increasingly important alongside mine planning, digital operations, industrial automation and long-term infrastructure investment.

First Mining shares gained about 2.1% in early Toronto trading following the announcement.
