The Yokogawa SSB401-53 S1 is a high-performance Optical ESB Bus Repeater Master Module designed for the CENTUM VP and CS 3000 Distributed Control Systems (DCS). This module serves as the primary gateway for extending the reach of the Extended Serial Backplane (ESB) bus via fiber optic cabling. By converting electrical signals into optical pulses, the SSB401-53 S1 allows for the integration of remote I/O nodes that are located beyond the distance limitations of standard copper wiring. It is an essential component for geographically dispersed plant architectures, providing the high-speed data backbone necessary for real-time process monitoring and control.

Long-Distance Transmission Utilizing a 1300 nm optical wavelength, the module can transmit safety-critical and process data over distances of up to 2 kilometers (approx. 1.24 miles) per segment. This optical transmission provides total galvanic isolation between system nodes, shielding the control network from lightning strikes, ground loops, and electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Deterministic Performance Despite the extended distances, the module maintains a steady data rate of 10 Mbps, ensuring that the I/O refresh cycles remain deterministic. This is critical for maintaining the high-speed control loops required in power plants and chemical refineries. The module is also designed for high availability, supporting redundant configurations when installed in pairs within the Field Control Unit (FCU).
