Petrobras Ultradeepwater Tupi Field Crosses Historic 4 Billion BOE Milestone
Marking two decades of development in Brazil’s prolific Santos Basin, Petrobras has announced that its premier ultradeepwater asset, the Tupi field, has reached a historic cumulative output of 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE). As the pioneer field that initiated commercial pre-salt extraction for South America, Tupi demonstrates how high-yield offshore reservoirs rely on sophisticated subsea control automation, continuous subsea telemetry systems, robust safety instrumented systems, and state-of-the-art predictive analytics software to maintain high operating efficiency under extreme hydrodynamic and pressure conditions.

Operating in extreme water depths exceeding 2,000 meters, the Tupi field has officially recorded 4 billion BOE in cumulative hydrocarbon recovery. Managed by Petrobras alongside consortium partners Shell, Petrogal Brasil (a Galp and Sinopec venture), and state-representative Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA), this achievement sets a historical benchmark for offshore extraction across South America.
Initially discovered in 2006 and brought online for commercial production in 2010, Tupi proved the commercial feasibility of deepwater pre-salt reservoirs. The operational model established at Tupi paved the way for subsequent developments across the Santos Basin, including the supergiant Búzios and Mero fields, which are celebrated for high reservoir productivity and low carbon intensity per barrel.
Under Petrobras' 2026–2030 strategic plan, pre-salt assets are projected to supply up to 82% of total corporate production by 2030, with national output targeted between 3.1 million and 3.4 million BOED. Achieving these targets relies heavily on 28 dedicated pre-salt FPSO vessels, advanced subsea water-injection sweep systems, real-time reservoir monitoring, and continuous subsea automation platforms engineered to withstand high hydrostatic pressure.
