Nord Drivesystems has announced the expansion of its IE5+ synchronous motor series with the introduction of a new 112 frame size. This addition extends the power range of the product line to 15 hp, addressing the critical industry requirement for high-efficiency motion control in continuous-duty applications such as intralogistics systems, material handling, and pumping infrastructure. By integrating advanced permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) technology into a larger package, the company aims to provide industrial operators with a more robust solution for reducing energy consumption and operational overhead.

The new SK 112 model complements the existing 71 and 90 frame sizes, effectively scaling the series to cover power requirements from 0.5 hp up to 15 hp with torque outputs reaching 387 lb-in. The core performance advantage of the IE5+ line remains its exceptional energy efficiency, which can approach 95 percent. By eliminating the need for electrical excitation through the use of high-strength permanent magnets, Nord significantly reduces energy dissipation, delivering a measurable impact on long-term power costs in facilities where equipment operates 24/7.

Beyond raw electrical performance, the IE5+ architecture offers significant operational flexibility. Unlike traditional motors that exhibit reduced efficiency under partial loads, the IE5+ series maintains consistent torque and energy performance across a broad speed range. This versatility allows manufacturers to standardize their inventory, using a single motor variant to cover multiple speed or torque applications, which simplifies maintenance planning and reduces the total number of spare parts required on-site.

The design philosophy also prioritizes material efficiency and sustainability. The motors feature an 8-pole interior permanent magnet arrangement, which optimizes power density and reduces the volume of magnetic material and sheet metal required. The implementation of single-tooth stator winding further minimizes copper usage. These engineering choices not only contribute to a smaller carbon footprint but also ensure that the high power density is housed in a compact form factor, simplifying installation in space-constrained machinery.

Available in both ventilated (TEFC) and non-ventilated (TENV) configurations, the IE5+ motors are built for diverse industrial environments. The smooth-body TENV versions, designed for hygienic food and beverage production, offer corrosion-resistant surfaces and are available with IP69K protection for rigorous high-pressure washdown protocols. As a fully modular system, these motors integrate seamlessly with Nord’s broader portfolio of gear units and electronic drive controls. With standard inclusions like incremental encoders and optional mechanical brakes or specialized mounting flanges, the IE5+ line serves as a comprehensive tool for engineers looking to optimize high-performance, energy-efficient automated systems.
