Emerson Secures Major Automation Contract for BP Shah Deniz Compression Facility

Energy giant BP has awarded global technology and engineering leaderEmersona multi-million-dollar contract to deliver advanced automation architectures for the $2.9 billion Shah Deniz Compression project off the coast of Azerbaijan. Serving as the main automation contractor, Emerson will deploy comprehensive process control and safety infrastructure to support a normally unattended offshore platform designed to boost recovery from low-pressure gas fields in the Caspian Sea. Operations engineers and procurement specialists looking for reliable process instrumentation, field controllers, or specialized IO modules can source certified process automation hardware through specialized suppliers offeringEmerson DeltaV control hardwarealongside dedicatedEmerson DeltaV SIS safety componentsto ensure flawless continuous plant operation across offshore assets.

The Shah Deniz Compression platform marks a significant technological leap toward fully autonomous offshore production. Equipped with four 11MW electric compressors, the offshore facility acts as a central compression hub for the Shah Deniz Alpha and Bravo production platforms. Located 55 kilometers offshore, the facility will be operated remotely from BP’s Sangachal onshore terminal south of Baku. Emerson’s integrated solution centers on its flagship DeltaV Distributed Control System and DeltaV Safety Instrumented System, handling critical functions including process control, automated safety shutdown, fire and gas detection, and power management. By leveraging cloud engineering and digital twin simulation tools during the design phase, project managers can virtually validate loop configurations and operator control logic prior to commissioning, minimizing risk across the platform's multi-year deployment cycle ahead of planned initial gas compression in 2029.
